What liposuction cannot do
- Liposuction cannot treat obesity (where majority of fat is “internal” or “deep/visceral”)
- Liposuction cannot replace a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is not a means to lose weight. It is intended to slim and reshape the body
- Liposuction cannot treat sagging or hanging skin in areas such as under chin, lower abdomen or inner thighs
- Liposuction cannot effectively treat cellulite which is dimpled skin with areas of fat deposits

Am I good candidate for liposuction procedure?
- Areas of fat deposits in your body that doesn’t respond to proper diet and exercise
- Good skin tone and elasticity
- Stable body weight within 30% ideal body weight – best candidates

What to expect at your liposuction consultation
- Listening to your surgical goals and expectations
- Evaluation of general medical conditions, medications, allergies, previous surgeries
- Examination of areas of your body with unwanted fat deposits. Assess amount of fat deposits through “pinch test”. Assess skin tone quality. If abdomen, search for possible hernias especially with prior surgeries and scars
- Take photographs
- Recommend a course of treatment. Discuss possible additional cosmetic body procedures at the same time
- Discuss the details of the procedures, risks and expected outcomes of the liposuction procedure

What are the associated risks of liposuction procedure?

What to expect from your liposuction procedure
- Liposuction is usually an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. However, high volume liposuction may sometimes be performed in the hospital or ambulatory surgery center that allows for a 23 hour overnight stay to provide IV fluid hydration and closer monitoring. Lower volume liposuction or spot treatments can often be performed in the office setting under local tumescent anesthesia
- The procedure takes between 1-2 hours depending upon how many areas are treated
- Dressings and compression wraps and binders are placed immediately
- Expect leakage of blood through the liposuction access points over the first 24 hours
- Encourage walking immediately after surgery
- First office visit with 48 hours to change fresh dressings and reapply compression garments
- May shower within 48 hours after first dressing change
- Expect progressive swelling and bruising first 5-7 days and noticeable reduction and improvement after 2-3 weeks. Very nice results at 6 weeks with final results at 2-3 months
- May begin massages either self massage or professionally within one week or when comfortable
- Light activity including car driving and lifting < 10 lbs 5-7 days; full activity 3 weeks
